TECO Rep. Wu Rong-chuan (center) toasts guests at the welcome banquet.
Ottawa overseas Chinese communities hosted a banquet at Mandarin Ogilvie Restaurant on Jan. 1, 2016, to welcome Amb. and Mrs. Wu Rong-chuan, the new Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Canada.
“The Republic of China (Taiwan) has always faced complicated diplomatic situations on the international stage,” Wu said. “Fortunately, the overseas Chinese communities have demonstrated great support and affiliation for the free and democratic ROC over the years. I will continue to promote ties between Taiwan and Canada based on the foundations laid by my predecessors.”
Wu added that Taiwan is an export-oriented country, while Canada is rich in natural resources. “The two sides are economically complementary, worthy for us to further expand bilateral trade interests to the utmost.”
Commenting on the upcoming presidential and legislative elections, Wu said, “Although the ROC is an emerging democratic country, regardless of the results, issues of foreign affairs have been the most reached consensus between major political parties.
“The ROC diplomats have always promoted Taiwan’s relations with other countries based on national interest,” he stressed.
The event saw an attendance of over 200 people, including Liberal Senator Pierrette Ringuette, ROC Overseas Community Affairs Council Commissioner (OCAC) Anthony Kam (金聲白) and Overseas Chinese Association President Ken K. L. Mak (麥錦鴻).
